First-timer's guide
Never been to a Hannah Fry show — or a live maths event? Here is what to do, bring and expect, step by step.
Step 1: Buy tickets
- Buy from the official seller for your date. Our ticket guide links to each one.
- Compare dates: weekday or weekend and two-night cities can help you decide.
- Check the per-order limit (typically six per household).
- Save your confirmation email and order reference.
Step 2: Plan travel
- Book trains early — advance tickets (on sale ~12 weeks ahead) are cheapest.
- Check our venue guides for parking, getting there and getting home.
- If you need a hotel, check the travel and hotels guide or the visitor guide for your city.
- Allow extra time: plan to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before the doors time on your ticket.
Step 3: Before you go
- Charge your phone: Most tickets are mobile-only. Open the ticket and check the barcode loads before you leave.
- Check the bag policy: Several venues only allow bags up to A4 size. Leave large bags at your hotel or use a nearby bag storage service.
- Check your venue's accessibility page if you need step-free access, a hearing loop, a companion ticket or any other assistance.
- Eat before or near the venue: Our city visitor guides list places to eat near each venue.
Step 4: At the venue
- Have your ticket ready on your phone (or printed).
- Staff scan your barcode at the entrance. Have ID if you collected at the box office.
- Find your seat (or area, for standing venues). Ask ushers if you are unsure.
- Most venues sell drinks and snacks. You generally cannot bring your own.
- Turn your phone to silent before the show starts.
Step 5: During the show
- Relax and enjoy. You do not need to know maths.
- The running time has not been published, but expect roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours (including any interval).
- Photography and recording rules vary by venue. Check before filming.
Step 6: After the show
- Check your transport home. Last trains vary; the Tube runs until around midnight in London.
- If there is a book signing, it has not been announced. Check the venue's social media on the day.
Common questions
Do I need to know anything about maths?
No. Hannah Fry's shows are designed for a general audience. The tour tagline — 'an evening of chance, chaos and questionable decisions' — suggests accessible, entertaining content.
What should I wear?
There is no dress code. Audiences at UK theatre and concert-hall shows typically dress casually. Wear what is comfortable.
Can I bring a bag?
Check your venue's bag policy before you go. The Eventim Apollo allows A4-sized bags only. Other venues may be more relaxed, but large bags and suitcases are rarely allowed.
What if I arrive late?
You may be asked to wait in the foyer until a suitable break in the performance. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes before the published start time.
